piece by piece
this life was built
this knowledge unearthed
fragments, seemingly unrelated,
joined to create a new perspective
and then the eyes, sewn shut so many years ago
swelled with heat, blossoming tears
and opened to see the final piece fall into place
knowing, without a doubt, in that very moment—
and in that moment alone
that all was as it should be

brick and mortar, these walls were built
thistle and thicket forbade escape
but this heart, this soul broke away
as a new light emitted from within
allowed for a new life to be forged

brick and mortar, these walls were built
and brick by brick this soul escaped
inch by inch this bright light crept
illuminating the shadows,
revealing a world previously unknown
